The 2027 Kawasaki Teryx H2 and Polaris RZR Pro R Boost are two of the biggest new names in the high-performance UTV market, and on the surface, they look like obvious rivals.

Both are wide, two-seat machines built around serious horsepower and long-travel suspension. Both are aimed at riders who want considerably more performance than a typical recreational side-by-side can offer.

But once you get past the headlines, these two machines take very different approaches to getting there.

Kawasaki leans toward a lighter, more compact package with a significantly lower starting price. Polaris goes harder on outright output, active suspension, electronics, and premium factory technology.

That makes this less of a simple horsepower comparison and more of a question of priorities.

For this comparison, we're looking at the least expensive two-seat version of each platform: the base Teryx H2 and RZR Pro R Boost Ultimate. Polaris doesn't offer a lower Pro R Boost trim, so while the Ultimate comes with considerably more standard technology than the base Kawasaki, these are the least expensive versions of each machine. We'll also look at Kawasaki's Limited eS and Polaris's Ultra where the premium equipment matters.

Current manufacturer specifications confirm just how closely matched some dimensions are—and how far apart others are.

Two Very Different Ways to Make Serious Power

Both machines use forced-induction inline-four engines.

That's where the similarities end.

Kawasaki takes the smaller-engine approach.

The Teryx H2 uses a 999cc supercharged inline-four producing a claimed 250 horsepower at 9,000 rpm and 146.3 lb-ft of torque at 8,800 rpm.

Polaris goes much bigger.

Teryx H2 Supercharged vs RZR Pro R Boost Turbocharged

The Pro R Boost uses a 1997cc turbocharged ProStar Fury inline-four producing a claimed 275 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 215 lb-ft of torque at just 4,000 rpm.

We're talking about nearly twice the displacement and two completely different forms of forced induction.

The Polaris also produces considerably more published torque, and it reaches peak torque much lower in the rev range.

Kawasaki's engine is the higher-revving package, with both peak horsepower and torque arriving near 9,000 rpm.

Neither approach is inherently better.

They're simply very different ways of building a high-output UTV.

275 HP vs. 250 HP: Does Polaris Really Have the Advantage?

On the spec sheet, this one's easy.

Polaris: 275 hp.

Kawasaki: 250 hp.

The RZR Pro R Boost has a 25-horsepower advantage.

But there's an important detail here.

Kawasaki states that its 250-horsepower figure is measured according to ISO 4106 and specifically notes that this standard differs from SAE horsepower measurements commonly used for automobiles. Polaris publishes 275 horsepower for the Pro R Boost but doesn't provide the same measurement-method disclosure on its current specification page.

That doesn't mean we should ignore the published numbers.

It does mean we shouldn't pretend that subtracting 250 from 275 tells us exactly how much faster one machine will be.

We haven't driven these machines back-to-back, and manufacturer horsepower figures alone can't answer that question anyway.

Especially once weight enters the conversation.

The 445-Pound Difference We Need to Talk About

This might be the most interesting number in the entire comparison.

Kawasaki lists the base Teryx H2 at an estimated 2,085.9 pounds dry.

Polaris lists the two-seat Pro R Boost Ultimate at 2,531 pounds dry.

That's a difference of approximately 445 pounds.

That's not small.

Using the manufacturers' published horsepower and dry-weight figures, the Kawasaki works out to roughly 8.34 pounds per horsepower, while the Polaris comes in around 9.20 pounds per horsepower.

In other words, despite giving up 25 published horsepower, the much lighter Kawasaki actually has the stronger calculated horsepower-to-dry-weight relationship based on those manufacturer figures.

But don't turn that into:

Teryx H2 is faster. We don't know that.

Acceleration involves considerably more than dividing horsepower by dry weight. Torque delivery, gearing, CVT calibration, traction, rotating mass, tires, drivetrain losses and engine response all matter.

The different horsepower measurement disclosures are another reason not to treat the calculation as a definitive performance test.

What we can say is that the Teryx H2's substantially lower dry weight complicates the assumption that the 275-horsepower Polaris automatically has a major performance advantage.

This matchup needs an actual drag race.

Until somebody performs one under controlled conditions, we're not going to invent the result.

101 vs. 104.5-Inch Wheelbase

The Kawasaki is also the shorter machine.

The Teryx H2 has a 101-inch wheelbase and measures 134.1 inches long overall.

The Pro R Boost has a 104.5-inch wheelbase and measures 136.5 inches long.

Both are exactly 74 inches wide according to their manufacturers.

A 3.5-inch difference in wheelbase isn't massive, but chassis dimensions matter when these machines start moving through technical terrain.

There's an interesting twist, though.

You might assume the shorter Kawasaki also has the tighter turning radius. Well, it doesn't.

Kawasaki publishes a 21.3-foot turning radius for the Teryx H2, while Polaris lists the Pro R Boost at 20.1 feet.

That's a good reminder that wheelbase alone doesn't determine maneuverability.

Steering geometry, steering angle and the rest of the chassis matter too.

Suspension: Don't Let the Numbers Fool You

This is where specification comparisons can get messy.

Kawasaki gives the Teryx H2 23.2 inches of front wheel travel and 24 inches at the rear, using FOX 3.0 Internal Bypass shocks on the base model.

Polaris advertises larger usable travel numbers for the Pro R Boost, but usable travel and wheel travel aren't the same measurement.

For a cleaner comparison, look at wheel travel.

The Pro R Boost Ultimate has approximately 22.25 inches of front wheel travel and 24.5 inches at the rear.

That puts the two machines remarkably close. The bigger difference isn't necessarily how many inches the suspension can move. It's what the suspension can do with them.

The Boost Ultimate comes standard with Polaris's DYNAMIX DV active suspension using FOX 3.0 Live Valve X2 internal-bypass shocks. Polaris also added new 2027 tuning including G-Out protection and rear bump control.

The base Teryx H2 uses manually adjustable FOX 3.0 Internal Bypass shocks. Kawasaki does offer electronically controlled suspension, but you have to move up to the Teryx H2 Limited eS.

That's an important distinction when we start talking about price.

Tires, Ground Clearance and Cargo Capacity

The Kawasaki comes from the factory on 33-inch Maxxis Carnivore Plus tires.

The Pro R Boost Ultimate uses 32-inch Pro Armor Trekker tires.

Ground clearance is nearly identical: Polaris lists 16 inches, while Kawasaki lists 16.1 inches in its standard configuration and 16.9 inches maximum.

Fuel capacity is almost a wash too:

Pro R Boost: 14.7 gallons

Payload is similarly close:

Teryx H2: 732 pounds
Pro R Boost: 740 pounds

Cargo capacity is not.

The Teryx H2's bed is rated for 300 pounds.

The Pro R Boost's box is rated for 150 pounds.

Nobody is buying either of these machines to replace a work UTV.

Technology Is Where Polaris Starts Justifying the Price

So far, the Teryx H2 has made that $32,899 starting price look pretty compelling.

But the Pro R Boost Ultimate isn't simply a Teryx with another 25 horsepower and a Polaris badge.

A significant amount of that additional cost is tied to technology.

The Pro R Boost Ultimate includes DYNAMIX DV electronically controlled suspension, a 10.4-inch RIDE COMMAND touchscreen, navigation and connected features, a factory Rockford Fosgate Stage 4 audio system and additional premium equipment.

Polaris also did a substantial amount of engineering behind the scenes to support the 275-horsepower engine.

The Boost gets a new high-capacity clutching system, additional cooling, a dual-radiator architecture, upgraded transmission and front drive system, strengthened half-shafts and revised calibration. Polaris also says the turbo system is designed to maintain peak power at elevations up to 10,000 feet.

The base Teryx H2 takes a simpler approach.

You still get a 7-inch full-color TFT display with smartphone connectivity, selectable Full/Mid/Low power modes and KTRC Kawasaki Traction Control, but you aren't paying for an active suspension system or a massive infotainment package.

That difference matters.

Especially depending on what you actually want from a UTV.

The $17,100 Question

Here it is.

Both currently carry the same advertised $1,995 destination charge.

Is the Polaris worth another seventeen grand?

There isn't one answer.

If you're comparing horsepower alone, probably not. Twenty-five additional published horsepower doesn't explain a $17,100 price difference.

But horsepower alone isn't what you're buying.

You're getting Polaris's DYNAMIX suspension technology, extensive electronics and infotainment, more published torque, the larger turbocharged engine and a chassis and drivetrain specifically engineered around sustained high-output performance.

The question is whether you'll actually use those things.

There's another comparison worth making here too.

Kawasaki's premium Teryx H2 Limited eS starts at $41,399 and adds KECS+ electronically controlled suspension, FOX 3.0 Live Valve Internal Bypass shocks, an electronically controlled sway bar, Garmin Tread navigation, beadlock wheels and other upgrades.

Even then, the Kawasaki remains $8,600 below the starting price of the Pro R Boost Ultimate.

That makes the value discussion much more interesting than simply comparing the cheapest Kawasaki with the Polaris.

Which One Makes More Sense for Dunes?

This is where the RZR Pro R Boost makes its strongest argument.

Polaris openly positions the machine around wide-open and desert performance.

You get 275 horsepower, 215 lb-ft of published torque, sophisticated active suspension and a turbo system Polaris says can maintain peak power at elevations up to 10,000 feet.

For riders spending significant time in places where there's room to actually use 275 horsepower, that package makes sense.

But don't dismiss the Kawasaki.

A 250-horsepower UTV weighing roughly 445 pounds less on the manufacturers' dry-weight figures isn't exactly bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Until these two machines are properly tested together in the same conditions, we're not ready to say which one is quicker or better in the dunes.

On paper, though, Polaris appears to be the more specialized high-speed package.

Which One Makes More Sense for Trails?

This one gets more complicated.

The Teryx H2 has the shorter wheelbase and shorter overall length while maintaining the same 74-inch width.

Independent testing will ultimately tell us much more about how that translates into actual trail behavior.

The Pro R Boost also shouldn't automatically be written off as the less maneuverable machine simply because it's longer. Its published turning radius is actually tighter.

For genuinely narrow trails, neither machine has an advantage.

They're both 74 inches wide.

If your riding area regularly includes 50- or 60-inch trail restrictions, you should be shopping for a different UTV entirely.

For wider technical trails, however, the Kawasaki's lighter and shorter package could make it particularly interesting.

We'd want to drive them together before going any further than that.

Teryx H2 vs. RZR Pro R Boost: Which One Should You Buy?

This isn't one of those comparisons where one machine embarrasses the other.

They're too different for that.

Choose the 2027 Kawasaki Teryx H2 if:

  • You want serious power without spending $50,000

  • You prefer the lighter and shorter chassis

  • 250 horsepower is already more than enough

  • You want 33-inch factory tires

  • You value the 300-pound cargo capacity

  • You don't need a large infotainment system or active suspension

  • Value matters as much as having the biggest horsepower number

At $32,899, the Teryx H2 is difficult to ignore.

Kawasaki gives you 250 horsepower, 33-inch tires, more than 23 inches of suspension travel at both ends and a 74-inch chassis while keeping the starting price dramatically below the Polaris.

Choose the 2027 Polaris RZR Pro R Boost if:

  • You want the most powerful production RZR Polaris has built

  • Dunes and open desert make up a large part of your riding

  • You want 275 horsepower and 215 lb-ft of published torque

  • Active suspension technology matters to you

  • You want RIDE COMMAND and premium factory electronics

  • You regularly ride at significant elevation

  • You're willing to pay considerably more for Polaris's flagship performance package

  • You want the RZR name and the history that comes with it

The Pro R Boost is expensive.

It's also far more than an engine upgrade.

Polaris redesigned supporting systems throughout the machine to handle the additional output, and the Ultimate comes standard with technology that simply isn't present on the base Kawasaki.

Two Different Answers to the Same Question

Kawasaki and Polaris are chasing the same customer from opposite directions.

Polaris built the 275-horsepower Pro R Boost around maximum factory performance, advanced suspension technology and the ability to sustain serious output in demanding conditions.

Kawasaki built a 250-horsepower Teryx H2 that's more than 400 pounds lighter on the published dry-weight figures and starts $17,100 cheaper.

That's what makes this comparison interesting. The Polaris wins the horsepower and torque numbers. The Kawasaki wins the weight and price numbers. Polaris brings considerably more technology. Kawasaki gives you larger factory tires and twice the rated cargo capacity.

And despite their differences, both machines are 74 inches wide and offer remarkably similar wheel-travel numbers.

So which one should you buy?

That depends on where you ride and what you want from the machine.

If wide-open desert and dunes are your priority—and you want the latest suspension, vehicle-control technology and outright power Polaris offers—the Pro R Boost makes a strong case.

If you're looking for a brutally powerful two-seater with a lighter, simpler package and a significantly lower starting price, the Teryx H2 makes an equally compelling argument.

What we aren't going to do is declare a performance winner from behind a keyboard.

These machines need to be driven back-to-back, on the same terrain and under the same conditions before making that call.

Until then, the specifications tell us something more useful anyway:

There are now two very different ways to build a 250-plus-horsepower two-seat UTV.

Which one makes more sense has a lot more to do with where and how you ride than which number is bigger.
