Polaris just introduced the most powerful production RZR it has ever built.
The 2027 Polaris RZR Pro R Boost makes 275 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. That's 50 horsepower more than the naturally aspirated RZR Pro R and enough to put Polaris back at the top of the production side-by-side horsepower battle.
But 275 horsepower isn't actually the most interesting part of this machine.
Adding more power is one thing. Building a UTV that can consistently put that power to the ground while managing the additional heat and stress is another.
That's where the Pro R Boost gets interesting.
Polaris didn't simply add a turbo to the existing Pro R. The company also reworked the clutching, cooling, transmission, front drive system, half-shafts, engine calibration and other supporting systems. On the Ultra model, Polaris takes things even further with its DYNAMIX DVS suspension and active sway-bar technology.
The result is a machine built around the demands of 275 horsepower, not just an engine capable of producing it.
We haven't driven the Pro R Boost, and production machines haven't had enough time in owners' hands to tell us how they'll perform after thousands of hard off-road miles. So this isn't a review.
Instead, we're looking at what Polaris actually changed, why those changes matter, who this machine makes sense for, and whether the Pro R Boost has the ingredients to become the new high-water mark for the RZR platform.
What Is the 2027 Polaris RZR Pro R Boost?

The RZR Pro R Boost is the new turbocharged version of Polaris's flagship 74-inch RZR Pro R platform.

The numbers put the Pro R Boost firmly at the extreme end of the production UTV market. But focusing only on those numbers misses much of what Polaris did here.
From 225 HP to 275 HP
The existing Pro R was already an unusual machine when Polaris introduced its naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder.
At 225 horsepower, it offered serious output without relying on forced induction.
The Boost changes that formula.
Adding turbocharging pushes output to 275 horsepower while also giving Polaris another important advantage: the ability to maintain performance as riding conditions change.
Polaris says the turbo system is designed to maintain full power at elevations up to 10,000 feet and in ambient temperatures up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit.
For riders in the western United States, that's more meaningful than another big horsepower number on a spec sheet.
A machine could spend one weekend ripping through the lower-elevation desert and another climbing into much thinner mountain air. Naturally aspirated engines become increasingly affected by the reduced air density as elevation increases. Turbocharging gives Polaris a way to compensate for that loss and maintain more consistent performance.
For riders who regularly move between dunes, desert and high-elevation terrain, that may ultimately be one of the Boost's most useful advantages.
275 Horsepower Doesn't Matter If You Can't Use It

This is where we think the Pro R Boost story gets much more interesting.
Polaris could have added power, slapped a Boost badge on the bodywork and let 275 horsepower dominate the marketing.
Instead, many of the important changes happened downstream from the engine.
The Pro R Boost receives a new high-capacity clutching system with increased airflow, additional cooling fins and a larger clutch design. Polaris also upgraded the transmission and front drive system and strengthened the half-shafts to deal with the additional load.
Then there's heat.
More power creates more of it, especially when a UTV is being driven hard through sand, desert terrain or sustained high-load conditions.
Polaris developed a dual-radiator cooling architecture for the Boost. A rear-mounted high-temperature radiator handles engine heat, while a separate front radiator helps manage the lower-temperature cooling needs of the turbo and transmission.
The roof scoop also serves a functional purpose by feeding air to the rear cooling system without relying on airflow through the front of the vehicle.
None of those changes are as exciting to put in a headline as 275 HP.
They may be more important to owning one.
Power is only useful when the drivetrain can transfer it, the cooling system can manage it, and the vehicle can continue delivering it when conditions get difficult.
That's the engineering story behind the horsepower number.
Polaris Is Betting That the CVT Still Belongs at the Top
The engine isn't the only thing worth talking about.
Polaris made an interesting decision with the transmission: It stayed with a CVT.
The Pro R Boost uses Polaris's automatic PVT system rather than moving to a conventional geared transmission.
That's especially interesting when you look at what's happening elsewhere in the high-performance UTV market. Can-Am took a very different route with the Maverick R and its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Polaris could have responded by abandoning the CVT at the top of the RZR lineup.
It didn't.
Instead, the company reworked the system to deal with even more power.
The Boost gets higher-capacity clutching, a larger belt, increased airflow and additional cooling designed to control heat under demanding conditions.
That creates one of the most interesting differences between the flagship machines from Polaris and Can-Am.
One manufacturer has moved toward a multi-speed DCT.
The other is continuing to develop the CVT.
There are legitimate advantages to both approaches, and we're not going to declare a winner based on a press release. Real-world durability, service costs, driving characteristics and owner experience will eventually tell us much more.
What we can say is that 275 horsepower makes Polaris's decision to stick with the CVT more significant than ever.
If the system proves capable of reliably handling this level of power under hard use, Polaris will have made a pretty strong case for continuing down this path.
The Pro R Boost Is Built for More Than Sea-Level Horsepower

One of the easiest things to overlook in all the horsepower talk is where people actually use these machines.
Utah is a perfect example.
You can run a UTV through Sand Hollow's dunes and desert terrain, then take the same machine into dramatically higher elevations elsewhere in the state. Head farther into the Mountain West and elevation becomes an even bigger part of the equation.
That creates a very different challenge from building something that produces a massive number under ideal conditions.
Polaris specifically calls out the Boost's ability to maintain performance up to 10,000 feet and in temperatures up to 115 degrees.
That's a pretty clear indication of the environments this machine was designed around.

Better brakes.
Better electronics.
And ultimately, better ways of making all that performance usable.
The horsepower war gets the headlines, but the engineering required to support it is pushing the entire category forward.
That's the part we're more interested in watching.
Ultimate vs. Ultra: The Boost Isn't Just About the Engine

The Pro R Boost will be available in Ultimate and Ultra trims, and the difference between them goes beyond appearance.
The Ultimate comes equipped with Polaris's DYNAMIX DV suspension using FOX 3.0 Live Valve X2 internal bypass shocks. For 2027, Polaris has also added new suspension tuning that includes G-Out protection and rear bump control.
Then there's the Ultra.
The Ultra receives DYNAMIX DVS, which adds active sway-bar technology capable of making adjustments up to 200 times per second.
The basic idea is to give the suspension more freedom when articulation is useful while still providing greater body control when the vehicle is being driven aggressively.

This is the part of owning a high-performance UTV that doesn't make the launch videos.
Rocks still fly.
Mud still gets thrown.
CVs, suspension components, bodywork and trailing arms still operate in an environment designed to beat the hell out of them.
And going faster generally doesn't make debris any kinder.
That's where protection starts making more sense on machines at this level.

Based on what Polaris has announced, the Pro R Boost makes a strong case for being the most capable production RZR the company has built to date.
It's unquestionably the most powerful.
But that's not what impresses us most. It's the amount of engineering Polaris appears to have put around that power.
The clutching had to change.
The cooling architecture had to change.
The drivetrain had to get stronger.
The calibration had to change.
The suspension technology continues to evolve.
And the turbo gives the Pro R platform a way to maintain more consistent performance across the heat and elevation changes that riders in the West regularly encounter.
That's why we think the Pro R Boost matters.
275 horsepower is the headline. Building a complete UTV capable of actually using 275 horsepower is the story.
Does that make it the best RZR ever built?
For dunes, open desert and riders looking for the absolute top of the Polaris performance lineup, it may very well be.
For tight trails, slower technical riding or anyone who can't realistically use what this machine offers, probably not.
And that's okay.
The best RZR isn't necessarily the one with the biggest number on the spec sheet. It's the one that fits where and how you ride.
